The VA Northeast Ohio Healthcare System is recruiting for a Medical Instrument Technologist (Echocardiography). The Medical Instrument Technologist (Echocardiography) will function in Medicine Service. Citizenship: Citizenship of the United States. (Non-citizens may be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens in accordance with chapter 3, section A, paragraph 3g, this part.) English Language Proficiency Medical Instrument Technicians must be proficient in spoken and written English in accordance with chapter 2, section D, paragraph 5a, this part. Grade Level Requirements Experience: At least 1 year of experience comparable to the next lower grade level which demonstrates the knowledge, skills, abilities, and other characteristics related to the duties of the positions to be filled. This would be experience which provided the overall knowledge, skills, and abilities to conduct diagnostic echocardiography examinations in complex and unusual cases. Experience at the GS-7 level may include: Ability to scan transthoracic echocardiograms in all views with colorflow and some Doppler. Ability to conduct cardiac testing to determine the severity and variety of cardiac problems, i.e., valvular dysfunction, myocardial wall kinesia, effusions, endocardial lesions, etc. Knowledge of the set-up for transesophageal echocardiograms. Ability to set up and adjust the ultrasound equipment to meet the conditions of the examination and the patient and to operate the equipment for more complex, but standardized procedures. In addition, the candidate must demonstrate the following KSAs: Demonstrated Knowledge, Skills and Abilities Ability to produce diagnostic quality images and Doppler frequency shift recordings using M-mode, two-dimensional, pulsed and continuous wave Doppler spectral display, and colorflow Doppler imaging. Knowledge of normal echocardiographic findings and deviations produced by a wide variety of cardiovascular diseases. Ability to perform complex procedures such as cardiac studies of the four chambers of the heart and valves using sector scanning techniques to detect stenotic and incompetent valves, chamber enlargement, and pericardial effusion and cardiovascular studies deriving pressure gradients across obstructed valves, etc. Ability to perform complementary ultrasonic examinations (including noninvasive) transthoracic, Bubble studies and contrast echocardiography, (invasive) stress echocardiography, and transesophageal echocardiography. Ability to adapt transducer positioning, instrument controls, and examination techniques to the individual patient being studied and the problem being evaluated including recognizing pertinent abnormalities and documenting abnormal findings. Preferred Qualifications: Registration by American Registry of Diagnostic Medical Sonography (ARDMS) as a Registered Diagnostic Cardiac Sonographer (RDCS) or by Cardiovascular Credentialing International (CCI) as a Registered Cardiac Sonographer (RCS Basic Cardiac Life Support (BCLS) and Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) certifications are desirable. Two (2) years' experience as an Echocardiography Technician in a hospital laboratory, performing 8 to 10 echos per day. References: VA Handbook 5005/54, Part II, Appendix G27 The full performance level of this vacancy is GS-8. Physical Requirements The work is primarily sedentary however may involve periods of pushing, walking or standing to observe work operations, assess physical requirements, travel to partner affiliates. Computer and IT use required on daily basis. The population of male and female veterans served ranges from the adult, age 18, to the elderly adult, age 65 and over. LSCVAMC is a major interdisciplinary teaching facility, serving medical, surgical, and psychiatric inpatients and outpatients. ["-Performs of a full range of Transthoracic echocardiograms (TTE) and Transesophageal echocardiograms (TEE) utilizing the cardiac ultrasound equipment -Uses the cardiac ultrasound machine to produce real-time ultrasound images of the heart and associated structures -Works efficiently and carries full responsibility for quality studies and for the operation of the highly specialized ultrasound equipment and computer stations within the Echocardiogram Laboratory -Works closely with the Cardiologists who interpret the echocardiograms -Provides training to Cardiology fellows and ultrasound students in performance of echocardiograms -Monitors patients independently and will need to respond to each individual patient's hemodynamic status, which may require triage to a higher level of care -Utilizes the hospital and department guidelines in completing their assigned work -Independently performs a complete echocardiographic -Recognizes all major forms of an adult cardiac pathology -Obtains the appropriate Doppler studies for quantitation as needed without supervision -Utilizes analysis software to generate quantitation data regarding valve areas and intracardiac gradients -Uses judgement to notify a physician for unusual or potentially dangerous cardiac pathology -Makes necessary arrangements to bring the patients to the Non-invasive Cardiac laboratory, connects the patient to the equipment and performs procedure without supervision -Disconnects the patient from the equipment and makes necessary arrangements to return the patient to the ward -Inventories and orders supplies necessary for conducting Transthoracic Echocardiograms (TTE) -Inventories and orders supplies necessary for conducting Transesophageal Echocardiograms (TEE) -Works with pharmacy to maintain inventory on echocardiogram contrast agents and saline for agitated saline studies (bubble study) -Works with biomedical engineering to maintain all cardiac ultrasound equipment (machines, transducers, reading stations, 3D workstations, TD100 machine -Assists with control of the Echocardiogram laboratory by coordinating, planning, organizing and executing the daily work potential to expedite workflow patterns within the department -Assists with maintaining the daily schedule and monthly/yearly statistics documenting workload pertaining to the echocardiogram, laboratory -Fields incoming calls to the echocardiogram laboratory -Assists in tracking of echocardiogram consults -Communicates with multiple departments in order to have complete staff availability for the procedure -Contacts the patient with all pre-procedure instructions and to answer any questions -Captures workload in the echocardiography laboratory by entering patient encounters in the VISTA scheduling package for all patients (inpatients and outpatients) Work Schedule: Monday through Friday 8:00 am to 4:30 pm Telework: Not Available Virtual: This is not a virtual position.
