The Outpatient Pharmacy Technician serves as a staff Pharmacy Technician at the Amarillo Health Care System. Incumbent performs a wide variety of complex procedures and activities on a rotating basis. This position functions primarily in the outpatient area of Pharmacy Service including expanded distribution function assignments. *** THE CLOSING DATE OF THIS VACANCY HAS BEEN EXTENDED *** Basic Requirements: United States Citizenship: Non-citizens may only be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens in accordance with VA Policy. Education or Experience. A high school diploma or equivalent; or at least 3 months experience. Physical Standards. See VA Directive and Handbook 5019. English Language Proficiency. Pharmacy technicians appointed to direct patient care positions must be proficient in spoken and written English in accordance with chapter 2, section D, paragraph 5a, this part. Grade Determinations: GS-5: Education OR Experience. Successful completion of a 4-year course of study above high school leading to a bachelor's degree that included at least 24 semester hours of courses related to pharmacy or pharmacy technology; successful completion of pertinent specialized training courses in pharmaceutical and pharmacy services while serving in the Armed Forces is creditable on a month-for-month basis up to the 1 year of experience required for the GS-5 level; or at least 1 year of experience at the next lower level that demonstrates the core competencies (KSAs) described at the GS-4 level. In addition, the candidate must demonstrate the following KSAs: 1.Ability to operate and care for automated dispensing devices and equipment 2.Knowledge of, and ability to perform, aseptic technique 3.Knowledge of basic inventory procedures 4.Knowledge of pharmacy information systems Preferred Experience: PTCB Certification Previous VA experience Experience working in a hospital pharmacy Experience working in a retail pharmacy References: VA Handbook 5005/15, Part II, Appendix G28, PHARMACY TECHNICIAN QUALIFICATION STANDARD, dated March 2006. Physical Requirements: This position requires moderate lifting/carrying (15-44lbs); use of fingers; walking (2 hours); standing (8 hours); near vision correctable to 13" to 16"; far vision correctable in one eye to 20/20 and 20/40 in the other; depth perception; Ability to distinguish basic colors; ability to distinguish shades of colors; hearing (aid permitted); emotional/Mental stability; typing & computer use. ["Duties include: (1) Reads and interprets prescriptions, obtains proper medication or material in the proper strength and dosage form; determines proper amount and counts, pours, or measures the medications; affixes proper label; and records required data on Pharmacy's copy of prescription/order or documents required data in the outpatient automated dispensing machine/robot. (2) Provides customer service concerning patient eligibility, prescription status, medication availability, co-payment charges and mailing status. Reviews daily notations from all call centers, documents, and enters notes which need further action from providers, pharmacists, and nurses or other appropriate personnel. Technician will also handle telephone inquiries, receive prescriptions and will reply to questions from patients concerning co-pay referring to the Medical Care Cost Recovery (MCCR) policies and procedures as needed. (3) Processes refill requests and verified prescriptions for mailing. (4) Enters new and refill prescription data which may include correct drug, strength, dosage form, and quantity into the patient's medication profile. (5) Answers all questions within their level of expertise from Pharmacy and non-Pharmacy personnel regarding drug distribution. (6) Identifies basic therapeutic problems such as duplicate therapy, patient allergy interactions/contraindications, formulary adherence, quantity errors and alerts the pharmacist to the possible need for clinical intervention. (7) Monitors inventory needs in outpatient Pharmacy areas, relays this information to the Pharmacy Procurement Specialist. (8) Conducts monthly ward inspection of assigned patient care/Pharmacy storage areas assuring proper storage, stock and drug expiration (9) Operates, maintains, fills/refills, and troubleshoots complicated, specialized or automated Pharmacy equipment. (10) Compounds and/or reconstitutes oral or external medications (non-sterile) following standardized formulas, recipes and procedures in weighing, measuring and mixing bulk quantities. (12) Opens and separates mail (13) Fills prescriptions, drug packages and supplies for distribution to wards, clinics and affiliated services which are checked by a pharmacist. (14) Prepares prescriptions (controlled substances and non-controlled substances) for mailing through contract carriers, USPS, and finalizes processing through the latest mail label tracking software. (15) Collects drug use evaluation data for quality improvement purposes. (16) Assists in total quality improvement activities by participating in Medical Center. (18) Prepares, handles and has knowledge of investigational drugs and their policies and procedures.
