The Oklahoma City VA Health Care System, Nuclear Medicine Service, is currently recruiting for one (1) GS-11 Nuclear Medicine Technologist-Fusion Imaging Technologist position in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma. Applicants pending the completion of educational or certification/licensure requirements may be referred and tentatively selected but may not be hired until all requirements are met. Basic Requirements: United States Citizenship: Non-citizens may only be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens in accordance with VA Policy. English Language Proficiency. Must be proficient in spoken and written English Certification. All applicants must be certified in nuclear medicine technology by the Nuclear Medicine Technology Certification Board (NMTCB) or the American Registry of Radiologic Technology (ARRT) (N). NMTCB or ARRT (N) certification eligibility requirements are normally satisfied by one of the following: (1) Completion of a NMTCB-recognized nuclear medicine technology program, OR (2) Completion of a nuclear medicine technology program accredited by the Joint Review Committee on Educational Programs in Nuclear Medicine Technology (JRCNMT), or other accrediting agencies as recognized by the U.S. Department of Education (DOE), culminating in a certificate, associate, baccalaureate, or master's degree. Educational programs must have structured clinical training sufficient to provide clinical competency in radiation safety, instrumentation, clinical procedures, and radio-pharmacy, as deemed acceptable by the NMTCB. NOTE: Technologists functioning as multi-modality technologists require additional specific certifications as stated in assignment descriptions below. Exceptions. Non-certified applicants, who otherwise meet the eligibility requirements for NMTCB or ARRT (N) certification, may be given a temporary appointment as a graduate NMT under the authority of 38 U.S.C. § 7405 (a)(1)(D). Failure to obtain certification [within 1 year from the date of appointment] is justification for termination of the temporary appointment. This may result in termination of employment. Failure to Obtain Credential. In all cases, NMTs must actively pursue meeting certification requirements starting from the date of their appointment. Failure to become certified within 1 year from date of appointment will result in removal from the GS-0601 NMT occupation and may result in termination of employment. Loss of Credential. Once certified, NMTs must maintain a full, valid, and unrestricted certification. Loss of credential will result in removal from the GS-0601 NMT occupation and may result in termination of employment. For occupations which require an active certification at all grade levels, at the discretion of the appointing official, an employee may be reassigned to another occupation for which he/she qualifies if a placement opportunity exists. For occupations which require an active credential (licensure/certification/registration) in assignments above the journey level only, at the discretion of the appointing official, an employee may remain at an appropriate lower grade level in the occupation when both of the following apply: the credential is not a requirement and a placement opportunity exists. Grade Determination: In addition to the basic requirements for employment, the following criteria must be met when determining the grade of candidates: GS-11Experience. For assignments above the journey level, the candidate must have 1 year of creditable experience equivalent to the next lower grade level directly related to the position being filled and must fully meet the KSAs at that level. Demonstrated Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities. The candidate must demonstrate all of the following technical KSAs: 1) Ability to produce and assess high quality fusion and quality control images using independent judgement to recognize abnormal or unacceptable results. 2) Practical knowledge and skill in the use of ancillary equipment with an understanding of how the results will affect the study outcome. 3) Knowledge of physiologic processes as they relate to altered radiopharmaceutical uptake and/or artefactual findings. 4) Knowledge of CT and/or MR radiographic techniques utilized in quality control and acquisition parameters. 5) Ability to recognize and correct fusion imaging system errors. References: VA Handbook 5005/125, Part II, Appendix G19. The full performance level of this vacancy is GS-11. Physical Requirements: The Nuclear Medicine Technologists-Fusion Imaging Technologist's work requires long periods of standing, sitting and walking up to 8 hours. There is repeated bending, pushing / pulling, reaching above shoulders, use of both hands (hands and fingers), twisting and carrying of moderately heavy articles weighing from 15-44 pounds such as shipping containers that contain shielded patient doses, phantoms, flood source, lead lined items that included but not limited to sharps container, syringe shields, L-Shield, and radioactive waste barrels. Positioning of patients who are disabled may require considerable effort and working in awkward positions. Heavy lifting is accomplished with assistance of Safe Patient Handling devices such as a ceiling lift. Nuclear Medicine Technologists must display emotional and mental stability. ["The following duties for the Nuclear Medical Technologist-Fusion Imaging Technologist include, but are not limited to: Fusion Imaging Technologists are under the supervision of the Nuclear Medicine Supervisory Technologist Responsible for independently performing wide variety of specialized & complex nuclear medicine procedures including but not limited to: diagnostic imaging SPECT/CT, PET/CT, Cardiac & General NM, & multifaceted radiopharmaceutical therapies Independently plans/coordinates work w/ other Nuclear Medicine Technologists Prepares for & participates in Environment of Care (EOC) rounds, NHPP & NRC inspections Work is reviewed for fulfillment of management objectives & compliance w/ regulatory & accrediting organizations Assumes on-call duties to provide 24hr coverage for the Nuclear Medicine Service on a rotational basis Is assigned & rotates in all areas of the Nuclear Medicine Service & must possess the required professional knowledge, skills & abilities to perform the following functions: Verifies patient identity, physician's procedure order, pregnancy status of females (when relevant), & checks for appropriateness of study & assure proper study performed in compliance with medical center & service policies Provides effective patient care by being responsive to the physical & emotional needs of the patient Establishes & maintains communication w/ patient/family Recognizes & responds to emergency conditions, appropriately, administering CPR, & other life-support assistance until relieved Performs pt medication use assessment, mobility, cognitive function, & sensory changes Stores/retrieves imaging data Performs non-imaging in-vivo procedures, such as thyroid uptake. Records data, calculates/analyzes results for accuracy/clinical correlation Explains procedure to pt so he/she/they understand it, answers questions, & addresses concerns Obtains relevant history & collects pertinent data to verify pt hasn't had previous diagnostic studies, medications, or conditions that may invalidate scan/test result or cause artifacts Responsible for equipment quality assurance program to include technical operation & safety Calibrates instruments, evaluates malfunctions & initiates repairs Assists Nuclear Medicine MD in performing wide variety of advanced radiopharmaceutical therapies including but not limited to I-131, Y-90, Sm-153, Ra-223 Decontaminates spills or areas of contamination to acceptable levels, including personnel, equipment, & work surfaces & notifies RSO Prepares/maintains radiation safety records & retrieves records as needed by the RSO, consults physicist, supervisor or auditors May participate In planning for space, equipment, & budget by compiling & evaluating data, forecasting needs, expenditures, etc Plans & conducts clinical instruction of nuclear medicine technology students in the imaging rotations-supervises & evaluates their performance Ensures staff maintain a high level of skill & meets at least the minimum level of continuing education required for certification &/or licensing Participates in Tracer Observations & EOC rounds monthly Communicates deficiencies to Supervisory Technologist & takes corrective actions Protects printed & electronic files containing sensitive data, according to the Privacy Act of 1974 & other applicable laws, federal regulations, VA statutes & policy Follows applicable regulations & instructions regarding access to computerized files, release of access codes, etc Utilizes tact, poise & diplomacy for internal & external customers Displays a cooperative attitude & works effectively to implement organization's mission & goals Performs other duties as assigned Work Schedule: Must be willing and able to work different tours -early shift 6:30 - 3:00pm or on-call tour to 7:30 to 4 pm to provide coverage as needed Compressed/Flexible: Not Available Telework: Not Available Virtual: This is not a virtual position.
