The primary duties of this position are performed in coordination with the Clinical Pharmacy Specialists (CPS) within Pharmacy Service of the Veterans Health Care System of the Ozarks (VHSO). The Clinical Pharmacy Technician must be a highly specialized, efficient, motivated and customer-friendly technician, who, under the authority of the Chief of Pharmacy Service (or designee in charge of clinical pharmacy services), assists in the management of various clinical pharmacy services at VHSO. Basic Requirements: United States Citizenship: Non-citizens may only be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens in accordance with VA Policy. Education or Experience: A high school diploma or equivalent; or at least 3 months experience directly related to the position to be filled. Certification: Certification by the National Pharmacy Technician Certification Board (PTCB) is required at grades GS-6 and above. English Language Proficiency: Pharmacy technicians appointed to direct patient care positions must be proficient in spoken and written English in accordance with VA Policy. Grade Determinations, In addition to the basic requirements for employment, the following criteria must be met when determining the grade of candidates: Pharmacy Technician, GS-7: Experience: One year experience at the next lower level and must fully meet the KSAs at the next lower level (GS-6) including the ability to troubleshoot operational problems and refer for appropriate action, knowledge of operation/care of automated equipment, ability to follow written instructions for compounding with aseptic technique for hazardous materials and routine sterile products, knowledge of policies and procedures for inventory management in specialized areas such as emergency carts, and knowledge of computerized prescription process. Demonstrated Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities, In addition, the candidate must demonstrate the following technical KSAs and the potential to acquire the assignment specific KSAs designated by an asterisk (*): *1. Ability to evaluate, analyze workflow, and coordinate work activities. 2. Ability to independently gather, evaluate, and analyze data to generate reports and/or for other projects/statistical purposes. 3. Knowledge of pharmacy policies and procedures sufficient to train and orient new employees and other staff 4. Comprehensive knowledge of the operation and care of specialized pharmaceutical equipment. 5. Comprehensive knowledge of the procurement and formulary process. 6. Comprehensive knowledge of investigational drug policies and procedures. 7. Comprehensive knowledge of controlled substance policies and procedures, and the ability to identify and investigate discrepancies in these policies and procedures. 8. Comprehensive knowledge of, and ability to, analyze data in VA information systems. (KSAs MUST BE CLEARLY DEMONSTRATED IN RESUME UNDER DESCRIPTION OF DUTIES IN ORDER TO BE FOUND QUALIFIED FOR THIS POSITION/GRADE LEVEL). This position is announced above the full performance level at the GS-7 level. Physical Requirements: The work requires extensive periods of sitting. Some periods of standing and walking will occur. Work involves lifting of weights up to 40 pounds. Incumbent will be subject to bending and stooping. Work will also involve the ability to use a personal computer, keyboard, mouse, and monitor for extended periods of time. Duties may include but are not limited to: Triaging incoming phone calls from patients, their family members, or other health care providers; communicating with home health agencies to arrange laboratory testing. Answers patient inquiries related to the clinic, pharmacy and medication refills process. Incumbent follows through with provider in CPRS as appropriate. Incumbent refers clinical and other judgmental questions to the CPS as necessary. Assists in the completion of annual Lost Opportunity Cost (LOC) initiative. Compiles, categorizes, and records workload data for various reports in order to establish a comprehensive record of work performed. Acts as coordinator for the pharmacy residency programs and Veterans Affairs Learning Opportunities Residency Program (VALOR). Assists in coordinating and scheduling education and teaching activities for pharmacists, pharmacy students, pharmacy residents and pharmacy technicians. Acts as the education associate for the Pharmacy Service. Performs computerized searches to obtain information from the pharmacy patient data base by using CPRS, VISTA, SQL, FileMan and ProClarity. Responsible for accurate and timely entry of progress notes and consults into the medical record system. Compiles documentation for and preparation of reports for clinical programs and activities.
