The Eastern Oklahoma VA Health Care System (Tulsa and Muskogee locations) is currently recruiting for 2 Pharmacy Technicians. The Pharmacy Technician must possess the skills to perform a full range of technical pharmacy duties as well as associated administrative duties. Tulsa - Outpatient Only Muskogee - Inpatient and Outpatient OUTPATIENT (Tulsa and Muskogee) Assists Pharmacist in filling prescriptions in the mail-out and outpatient section. This includes: interpreting and clarifying prescriptions, obtaining correct stock or containers, counting correct amount of medication, attaching correct label to filled container and setting it aside for the final check by a Pharmacist. Maintains the cleanliness and stock in automatic dispensing equipment. Maintains clean, orderly work environment. Performs bulk compounding of routine and simple pharmaceuticals and extemporaneous compounding of more complex formulas and records compounding information for quality control and AMIS data collection. Assists Pharmacist in bookkeeping, filing, and maintenance of daily records for control of funds, cost of drugs, ordering drugs and supplies, security, and accountability. Performs packaging of prescriptions for mailing, which includes registered narcotics, which require special wrapping, documentation, and accountability. Assists in the training and orientation of new employees and volunteers. Answers inquiries from patients/caregivers and hospital staff relating to medication management. Receives prescription requests from patients at outpatient window, assesses the need for filling, and initiates the process if appropriate. Assists the pharmacist in assimilating, labeling, and dispensing prescriptions. INPATIENT (Muskogee) Responsible for the prepackaging of unit-of-use and unit dose drug items used in dispensing function as well as items for ward stock. Responsible for automatic replenishment of "approved inventory" of medications in "official storage areas". This involves maintaining par levels as determined by usage. Replenishes, monitors, and replaces emergency medications in the emergency carts. Receives and processes returned excess, outdated, deteriorated, or otherwise unusable medications and supplies for return to stock, credit, or disposal. Selects IV additives and containers, mixes and/or prepares IV medication using sterile techniques and sets aside for Pharmacist to check and attach label; records IV compounding and dispensing information on the compounded sterile products (CSP) log for audit trial, data collections, and quality control; delivers IV's to correct patient care area at appropriate times. Performs general housekeeping cleaning and equipment maintenance of Pharmacy areas and specific cleaning and equipment maintenance required for processing compounded sterile products. Maintains clean and orderly work environment. MATERIAL MANAGEMENT Maintains stock while dispensing by notifying the procurement technician of stock shortages, and need to restock. Also assists procurement technician in determining and maintaining stock levels to ensure timely delivery. Restocks medication in automatic dispensing equipment. Ensures manufacturer's requirements for shipping, handling, and storage. Places received stock in well-defined stock areas to ensure accurate assembly and completion of dispensing processes. Assists in assessing quality of stock medication, outdates, and acceptability of medications for dispensing and use; packages unusable medications for return processing.
