The Michael E. DeBakey VAMC Department of Surgery is currently seeking exceptional candidates for the position of Physician Assistant in the ENT,PA-C Department. As a medical professional, you will be responsible for reporting patient care activities in the medical record. As a physician assistant, you will be authorized to enter clinical orders in the medical records of patients admitted to the Operative Care Line for care. Responsible for all orders, progress notes, consultation requests, discharge summaries, reports of histories and physical examinations. You will assist in surgical procedures as first or second assistant when needed. You will perform all procedures in the clinic including but not limited to management of acute and chronic health problems; ordering, interpreting and performing interventions based on diagnostic studies including radiology and laboratory studies; prescribing pharmacologic agents (per VHA Directive 2008-049; MCP 118CPO-002; VHA Directive 10-95-020 -General Guidelines for Establishing Medication Prescribing Authority for Clinical Nurse Specialists, Nurse Practitioners, Clinical Pharmacy Specialists, and Physician Assistants) except for controlled substances; providing consultation; admitting and discharging of patients, conducting patient rounds or providing Medical Officer of the Day responsibilities. Duties include but are not limited too: Routine Duties (check all those which are appropriate): Performing initial histories and physical examinations on inpatients and outpatients. The supervising physician will review and sign all admitting inpatient history and physical exams. Providing ongoing outpatient and inpatient care for assigned patients. Performing periodic physical examinations on nursing home and domiciliary residents. Screening outpatients to determine need for further care. Prescribing medications within defined scope of practice. Ordering diagnostic studies such as laboratory tests, x-rays, electrocardiograms (EKGs). Carrying out health promotion and disease prevention activities. Drawing blood specimens for testing and performing other comparable lab procedures. Initiating and expediting requests for consultations and scheduling special tests and studies. Making daily rounds to observe and record each patient's medical progress, updating and summarizing medical records. Changing orders when appropriate, and notifying the responsible physician of significant changes in the patient's conditions. Making interim summaries of the patient's medical record. Dictating discharge summaries. The supervising physician must sign the discharge summary. Dictating notes on procedures performed for which the PA is responsible. Providing education and counseling of patients and families in preventive care, medical conditions, and use of prescribed treatments and drugs. Provides training to PA student Non-routine/Non-emergency Duties. The Michael E. DeBakey VAMC is the most complex level 1A facility within the VA system and has the most complex surgical service offering state of the art surgical technologies. MEDVAMC serves as the acute tertiary care referral center for a large veteran population in East Texas, Louisiana, Arkansas, Oklahoma and Mississippi. The orthopedic surgery service is the busiest in the country and offers expertise in very complex cases. Work Schedule: Monday-Friday; 7am-3:30pm Financial Discloser Report: Not required
