This position is located in the Research & Development Service of the VA Medical Center in Palo Alto, CA. The Health Science Technician will participate in various phases of health services research as needed such as enrolling participants, collecting data, preparing samples for shipment, and providing support to the Local Site Investigator. ***THIS IS NOT A VIRTUAL POSITION, YOU MUST LIVE WITHIN OR BE WILLING TO RELOCATE WITHIN A COMMUTABLE DISTANCE OF THE DUTY LOCATION*** Assist with all local site activities related to enrollment; Schedule and conduct participant visits, including structured interviews, health assessments, and blood draws; Prepare and maintain all program documentation related to enrollment, per protocol; Centrifuge, process, and ship samples to designated laboratories, complete required study documentation and obtain or administer informed consent for study participants; Interact directly with research participants, serve as their first point of contact for questions and inquires related to the program; Discuss the consent process including an overview of the research program and its risks and benefits; Assist supervisor with managing the routine, day-to-day activities of the program, including conducting structured interviews, collecting data, and maintaining research records for approximately 4,000 participants per year; Maintain local site documentation and records in the investigator study file; Create and maintain appropriate tracking and filing systems for all documentation and patient samples, per protocol; Complete and maintain all program-related records for each participant, including consent forms, data management system, and source documentation worksheets; Develop appropriate processes for updating and maintain records as needed; Respond to general inquiries from program participants, staff, and other stakeholders; Draft correspondence and general communications regarding the program, including memorandums and reports as requested by the Research Coordinator; Assist with scheduling meetings, arranging for space, notifying participants, preparing the agenda and minutes and following-up on all commitments to ensure that necessary arrangements have been made; Prepare documents and research matters for the staff, including documents of a confidential and/or technical nature; Secure, assemble, and summarize information from files, documents in the office or other available sources for use by the staff; Organize the information, develop reports, and highlight the most important portions for the staff; Input data into a number of electronic databases which might include: Microsoft Outlook, Excel, WORD, PowerPoint, or Access; IFCAP, and other VA databases; Extract data to prepare reports, sort and summarize data elements, manipulate the data by performing statistical queries that are pre-programmed or are built within the Microsoft or VA software; Manage implementation, control, and reporting on clinical tests; Maintain records and prepare project administrative and statistical reports as needed; Draft and maintain all documentation required for clinical portion of research participation; Perform related duties as required. Work Schedule: Monday through Friday, 8:00am - 4:30pm. NOTE: This is a TERM appointment (not-to-exceed 3 years). Term appointments are non-status, nonpermanent appointments of limited duration (more than 1 year but not more than 4). Term employees are eligible to earn leave and generally have the same benefits as permanent employees including health and life insurance, within-grade increases and Federal Employees Retirement System and Thrift Savings Plan coverage. Term appointments may be extended without further competition (up to the 4 year maximum). The appointment to a Term position does not confer eligibility for promotion or reassignment to other positions or the ability to be non-competitively converted to permanent employment.
