About La Paz Regional Hospital
LPRH is in the heart of the west, 2-4 hours from Phoenix, Las Vegas, San Diego, LA and Tucson. We provide great rural health medicine and we are a past winner of the Thompson Top 100 Hospital's. La Paz Regional Hospital is a 25-bed Critical Access Rural hospital in Parker, Arizona, approximately 150 miles west of Phoenix and 35 miles south of Lake Havasu City. The hospital has full service digital imaging with echo/carotid capability, purchased a 64-slice CT in January and is adding nuclear studies now. We have a 3-bed ICU. In addition we just opened an Urgent Care Center within our Emergency Department. January 2010, we opened our new Surgery Department which also has a new Cath Lab within the department. In 2009, we added MRI and Nuclear Medicine to our Imaging Departments. Our Emergency Department was built in 2006. In 2009 we built a new Rural Health Clinic in Quartzsite which now includes an Imaging Center with CT and Diagnostic equipment. All our departments are staff with qualified, excellent employees and State-of-the-Art equipment. The hospital is a 501(c)3 non profit corporation with a local volunteer board of directors. We don't have any bui...lding debt and plan to add on as we go. The hospital operates outreach clinics in Salome, Bouse and Quartzsite although our ultimate goal is to bring in private doctors for these practices. Recently, an article published in the Phoenix newspaper touted La Paz County and the "oldest" county in the country. This is not to say our county was formed long ago. Rather, we are the oldest in terms of the age of our population. As a desert community, retirees flock here for easy living, and our winter influx is phenomenal. One of our towns, Quartzsite, boasts an average age of 72. We have a younger population too, offering schools - three high schools and five grade schools in the county. April 2007, we were listed as one of the Top 100 Hospitals in America in Modern Healthcare Magazine, according to a study by Thomson’s. Thomson’s listed five categories, from major teaching hospitals to small hospitals and we were listed in the small hospital category. This was not an application or nomination process. Rather, it was based on data submitted to federal and state agencies, including mortality, complication rate, Medicare Quality initiative data and financial data. We are a small hospital in a rural area, but are growing rapidly. Arizona is touted as being the fastest growing state in the nation. Parker is in the low desert, so we are quite warm in the summer and experience mild wonderful winters. Essentially we have three seasons, although this past year our fruit crops were threatened by three days of night freezes, the first in over ten years. We have two main industries: agricultural and tourist. Being in a warm climate next to the Colorado River for irrigation allows a year around growing season. Farmers can harvest a new crop of alfalfa almost every month. We grow many kinds of fruit here, including cantaloupe, watermelon, and many fruit trees - grapefruit, orange, Page 2 tangerine, peach, lemon and lime. Our most profitable crop is cotton, and we rival the south for cotton production. The second largest industry is the tourist industry. Again, the Colorado River provides endless recreational opportunities, including boating, fishing, and jet skiing, etc. While this is a heavy part of our traffic in the summer, it is really the winter "snowbirds" that make us successful as a tourist haven. Our climate draws retirees from Canada and the northern states, in their RVs or into mobile home parks. I think our medical staff is terrific. Our CEO was connected to a for profit health care chain for over twenty years before coming here five years ago and she feels this is a great place to work. To work in a hospital where the board is only interested in giving the community excellent services, and with a medical staff that still has those "old fashioned" notions of support of one another and respect.
