The Pharmacist Specialist is an expert in a specialized area of the clinical pharmacy practice and is professionally recognized through board certification or credentialing for their area of expertise.  Provides direct patient care through drug therapy and pharmacological consultation in the designated specialty as a member of a multi-functional care coordination team.

The incumbent is responsible for ensuring the safe, clinically sound, and cost effective use of medications related to the designated therapeutic area, in part by working with the Pharmacy and Therapeutics Coordinator to develop and conduct drug use evaluations, developing and updating clinical guidelines or policies regarding drug use, contributing to the quality assurance process of protocol and guideline adherence, coordinating or regularly contributing to department and/or medical staff committees, and conducting clinical research.  In addition, the Specialist oversees the competency of other pharmacy staff regarding drug therapy in the designated specialty through the provision of staff development in-services, written educational materials, and/or individualized observational assessment and feedback.

Supervises resident activities as the Program Director for second year pharmacy resident(s) in the same specialty area, and ensures each new resident meets university requirements annually and that the program complies with residency accreditation standards at all times.  Acts as an advisor for student and resident research projects as appropriate and has notable teaching responsibilities including precepting pharmacy residents and students, and providing in-services or continuing education lectures to pharmacists, physicians, nurses, and other clinicians as requested.

Required Qualifications

  • Must be California Pharmacist License eligible and possess a valid license at the time of hire
  • 5 or more years clinical pharmacy experience.
  • Drug information experience.
  • Educational experience and ability to work with, direct and evaluate pharmacy residents and students.
  • Educational experience and ability to work with and direct health care professionals.
  • PALS and/or ACLS certification
  • Ability to communicate well and make independent decisions to resolve minor problems as they arise.
  • Prior experience in techniques required or ability to learn.
  • Ability to supervise technicians and establish priorities of workflow.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Complete working knowledge of, and skill to apply, practices, principles and techniques of patient care related to area of expertise.
  • Written and oral communication skills to clearly and concisely provide information, explanations and instructions to, and to elicit information from others with varying levels of ability to understand, including individuals who are ill or distressed, or who may not speak English. Interpersonal skills that: Establish and maintain a friendly, welcoming environment for customers; Demonstrate an interested, understanding, compassionate manner; Maintain a courteous and calm demeanor; Proactively approach to negotiate with and persuade others to take required action.
  • Ability to maintain composure, efficiency and a positive, customer-service oriented manner during periods of peak workload, with frequent interruptions, under tight deadlines, and when interacting with challenging customers who may be ill, angry, or emotionally distressed
  • Problem-solving skills to independently recognize and define a problem; identify the resources available to help solve the problem; create and implement viable solutions; and follow through to ensure the problem is resolved to the satisfaction of all parties.
  • Decision-making skills to independently exercise delegated authority to act, and to recognize when it is appropriate to seek assistance from others when limits of delegated authority have been reached.
  • Ability to exercise discretion to ensure that patient confidentiality is maintained, and a professional, respectful environment always exists.

Special Requirements

  • Minimum of 5 years of equivalent clinical experience required.  Pharmacy practice residency along with a specialty residency is preferred.  Board certification in respective specialty area preferred if currently available within the profession.  This position is "exempt" and on occasion the employee may have to work longer than the scheduled shift.  The situation may arise where the employee will need to return to work in emergency situations.  The employee will need to be available by phone or pager after hours for consultation if needed.
  • The position will include primarily day shifts with rotating weekend shifts, occasional evening or night shifts and holidays. Practice sites will include various inpatient hospital areas.  Basic CPR certification required within 90 days of employment.  TB skin testing required annually.  Must have good personal hygiene and dress in a professional manner consistent with the Departmental professional behavior policy and abide by Departmental attendance standards.  Special protective equipment must be used for required preparation of hazardous substances and spill cleanup.
  • This position may be subject to a criminal background investigation, drug screen, Live Scan fingerprinting, medical evaluation clearance, and functional capacity assessment.
